A recent study from the University of Exeter revealed that Ancient Greek doctors invented the renowned Mediterranean diet, as Hippocratic physicians prescribed healthy diets and used rich flavours in food in order to treat their patients. "Experts at the University studied texts of ancient Greek doctors and found that they believed rich flavours could improve the food's nutritional potency. According to the same study, the work of ancient Greek doctors laid the principals of modern Mediterranean cooking".
The Mediterranean diet is a healthy-eating plan that's based on the traditional cuisines of Greece, and other countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. It's plant based and incorporates the long established flavours and cooking methods of the region. It has stood the test of time and still considered one of the healthiest of all.
"The Mediterranean Diet is not a “diet” in the sense that it is a rigid set of rules to follow, but rather a pattern of eating that is based on enjoy delicious, healthy foods. The Mediterranean Diet has been shown to have numerous health benefits including reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer".
A key component of the diet is "Extra Virgin Olive Oil". You guessed it! I repeat EVOO and not just any oil! It's used for both cooking and as a condiment. Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This is where Phileos comes into the equation. A quality EVOO has been at the heart of this diet for thousands of years starting with our ancestors the Ancient Greeks. Other components of the Mediterranean Diet include fish, fresh fruits and vegetable, legumes, poultry, nuts and seeds which are bound together by olive oil.
If you incorporate the above mentioned healthy foods into your regular meals you will derive the health benefits that also come along with it.
"Olive oil is the main fat source in the Mediterranean diet. Total fat isn’t as important as the type of fat. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes eating more heart-healthy fats-poly- and monounsaturated fats-and fewer saturated and trans fats. Saturated and trans fats raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Swap butter for heart-healthy fats like olive oil to lower your cholesterol and improve your heart health".
